16 dead as cyclone destroyed 24,000 homes in Indonesia.

Indonesian authorities say at least 16 people have been killed and more than 23,000 houses destroyed by strong winds and falling trees caused by tropical cyclone Iggy. The severe weather hit parts of Indonesia's Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara islands. Rescuers in Bali found the body of an 18 month-old girl on Monday, after heavy rains triggered a landslide. Local media say the girl was inside a food stall with her mother when the landslide hit. The mother survived. Elsewhere in Ngawi, East Java province, more than 200 houses were destroyed by strong winds on Saturday.

Operations at the port in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara province, have been halted since Thursday as waves reached four metres high. According to spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, most of the victims “were crushed by falling trees.” Another 60 people have also been injured. Officials say more than 23,000 homes in 35 districts across Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara islands have also been destroyed by Cyclone Iggy.

On Saturday, heavy rainfall caused a massive landslide in Bali. An 18-month old baby girl was among those killed in the storm. Rescuers say the river's strong current has made their search more difficult. During the annual rainy season -- which peaks between December and February in Indonesia -- storms, landslides and floods are common.
